BKIA Annual General MeetingThe weather did finally relent and allow for the rescheduled AGM to take place at Motor Sports House on Wednesday 25th February. Minutes of the meeting have been sent to all members. Please take a moment to read these. The elected Committee for 2004 is: Alan Turney (Chairman), Russell Anderson, Nick Barrow, Peter Catt, Martin Collard, Clive Freke, Richard Jest, Steve McMahon, Grant Munro, George Robinson, Ron Shone, Steve Tillett. Co-opted member Philip Bunn. MSA Items Comer W60 Cadet Engine Oil If you need help please let me know. Measurements A few instances have been found where piston wear has affected inlet timing and a revised measurement procedure has therefore been developed. This will require a solid inlet port tool to be used in place of the feeler gauge method. Zip are releasing details of these revised requirements and also obtaining the tools for distribution. Spark Plugs In order to counter a move towards using expensive alternative plugs the MSA is publishing an amendment to the class regulations which will only permit either Bosch W2AS or WO8AS types to be used. I have heard from a few members already regarding this and would appreciate all views. Carburettor Another expensive and unwanted feature is to be controlled through defining the Tillotson production sequence numbers that will be permitted. Other carbs falling outside of these will not be permitted.
Air Filters The MSA has confirmed that it is permissible to attach a gauze or mesh to the external face of the airbox trumpet. This must not alter the shape or size of the trumpet venturi. No modifications to the airbox or trumpet can be made for the purpose of attaching the gauze or mesh. The maximum thickness of the gauze or mesh permitted is 1mm.
Bodywork This matter rumbles on and the latest guidance from the MSA is attached. There still remains an issue over cutting of pods for Rotax in order for some types to accommodate the radiator. The CIK has made it clear to the MSA that it will not accept cutting of homologated pods.
New Structure for UK Karting Attached MSA press release which should be self explanatory. Further comment is included in the ABkC Newsletter also attached. The BKIA will be working with all parties concerned to make sure that the trade is included in the decision making process. Other details of the working arrangements have yet to be discussed and these will be circulated as soon as we know more.
Kart Committee At the meeting this week there were a few discussions of potential interest. There will be a review of age/weight breaks for the jump from Cadet to Junior classes together with an ongoing monitoring of class speeds. Judicial issues are being reviewed with the aim of reducing the forever length of protest/appeals and make the judicial process slicker. Let’s hope that karting can again show a lead to other disciplines. The continued use of black and yellow quartered flags was confirmed. A review will take place with the ABkC of the requirements for new and modified classes commonly known as N1.3’s. The thorny matter of junior pushers, now known as Assistant Incident Marshals, was again discussed particularly on the grounds of overall event safety.
MSA Yearbooks On Line Rumour has it that the Competitors Yearbook will be going on line and viewable through the MSA web site www.msauk.org. I will let you know when this occurs.
Kart Control Board Part of the MSA press release refers to the disbandment of the Kart Control Board and its activities being absorbed into the MSA Kart Committee. At the KCB meeting held on Tuesday 16th March the KCB member organisations unanimously agreed that this dissolution was not desired. It was stated that not only was the work carried out so far especially in the preparation of the KCB Guidelines of great value but that there was still a significant amount to do in the Health and Safety side of all karting operations. All parties therefore agreed to continue.
The KCB exists to provide a link between commercial and MSA karting activities and to advise member organisations on issues such as Health and Safety. Membership includes the BKIA, NKA, ABkC, ARKS and MSA. Copies of the KCB Guidelines for Operation of Higher Performance Race Karts are available to BKIA members on request, preferably by e-mail in pdf format.
CIK Items During the FIA World Council meeting held in December the following recommendations (extracted from minutes) were adopted.
1. Licence media rights for CIK-FIA championships back to the organisers in 2004. 2. Reconfirm CIK policy for transfer from 2 stroke to 4 stroke engines but also review timescales. 3. Delay CIK 4 stroke championships until 2006 at earliest in conjunction with injection and catalysts. 4. Contribute to EC report on recreational engines and regulatory requirements. 5. Adopt from 2005 single cylinder regulation for proposed 4 stroke engines 6. Phase out 100cc engines in favour of 125cc, earliest 2009, latest 2013. 7. Run 4 stroke world championship from 2006 (earliest) and introduce in parallel 125cc 2 stroke formula until end of transition period (earliest 2009/latest 2013). 8. Adopt single engine/single chassis per event from 2005. 9. Strong support to World Formula. 10. Introduce a simplified and more efficient structure for CIK, closer to that of FIA Commissions.
Clearly if we have comments to make we must get these to the MSA soonest. I will happily co-ordinate a response. Don’t forget that you can keep up to date with CIK changes, etc by going to www.fia.com.
