MSA Kart Committee

Chain, sprocket and rear axle protection.

Chains and sprockets will be required to be better protected on non gearbox karts to be covered at least down to the bottom of the axle. This coverage must not allow fingers to have access to the drive and it will also recommend clutches to be fitted with a metal protective cover. Access for starter is permitted. This takes effect 1.1.2005.

Steering Locks

The fitment of a steering lock will not be permitted when karts are being driven.  This is to prevent  locks used for steering alignment accidentally engaging while the kart is racing. With effect 1.1.2005.

JICA Age

From 2005, competitors will be allowed from their 12th birthday provided they have held a Nat A licence for at least 12 months.  All JICA drivers will need a National A licence from 2005.

Medical

The Kart Committee endorsed an amendment requiring drivers with a physical disability to display a white ‘D’ on blue background on both sides of the vehicle (kart) adjacent to the competition number. This is to assist marshals in case of an incident.

Tyre Treatment Tests

A means of testing for illegal treatments has been demonstrated to the MSA who will now carry out an evaluation programme so that this can be introduced and meet judicial requirements. The initial demonstration was convincing enough to show that claims of such practices being undetectable as false. The equipment is not cheap but if it cuts out blatant cheating then it has to be something we can all support.

Floor Tray/Chassis Bolts

Concern has been expressed regarding bolts protruding on the underside of the chassis and which could cause injury in kart over kart type incidents. At worst protruding threads should be cut to the correct length and/or protected; even better would be to use domed nuts.

Kart Race Yearbook

The ABkC welcomes input from the trade on revisions to class regulations so if you have any suggestion/proposals please forward them to me asap. The engine regulations for Junior Gearbox are described in the Gold Book.

If there is anything else in the Gold Book you would like to see amended for 2005 please let me have this too.

CIK Safety Commission

John Symes is the MSA rep on this commission and has asked me to pass on his request for suggestions/comments/proposals for future standards. The next meeting is on 15th September and indications are that a review of front wheel protection will be on the agenda.
